ART

One of the greatest of wonders for me is to acknowledge the direct communication with nature around us. Sometimes, it’s the spirit of a place. Sometimes, it’s asking the river what is needed. Most often, it’s the plant forms that become a huge source of information and reference for a point of elemental nature force, or archetypal and ancestral connection.

Plants are so often my muse - plants and the medicine or message they imbue. They bring me an aliveness and into a relationship that goes beyond intuition or instinct, one that forms and transforms my art work into something new each time. I like to find their energetic signature. From the encounter, I am left changed by their character, and usually restored in some way.

Each work is a study and made in ritual. I work in sequences. I make offerings and build altars. I draw from dreams, observation, and automation. I eventually like to come to a colour or gesture that is the sum of that journey. I also return to a plant over and over, year after year to continue conversations.

The medium I use tends to be in sync with the elemental journey I feel inspired by, and I ususally make my own pigments for the plants or landscape I’m studying.
